Birdathon

Announcment: Birdathon results 2023

The 2023 Birdathon was a great success. How could it not have been with experts like David Ellsworth, Evi Meyer, Dave Moody, Jonathan Nakai and David Quadhamer taking part? Between us, we had 116 species on a gloriously beautiful day. A list of birds seen can be found here. Among them were our Palos Verdes Peninsula specialties Cactus Wren and California Gnatcatcher, the latter scarce enough that it is a federally protected species. The surprise of the day was another of those protected species, Bell’s Vireo. It is always rare here, but at least three showed up at separate locations around the peninsula on Birdathon Day.

Please consider a buck-a-bird Birdathon donation. You will receive an official acknowledgment of your donation in return. Please send your check made out to PV/South Bay Audubon to PO Box 2582, Palos Verdes, CA 90274, or donate online at pvsb-audubon.org.

PV/SB Birdathon

Each year the Palos Verdes/South Bay Audubon sponsors an event to raise funds for our ongoing projects. We call this fundraising event The Birdathon. Usually we do this event in late April.

The event is basically several Board members and volunteers traveling around the South Bay and Palos Verdes Peninsula counting and documenting how many species of birds that can be recorded in a 24-hour period, and, most importantly, raise money for Audubon.

The number of bird sightings can run anywhere from 65 with only one or two people out looking, or up to 135 species on a “birdy” day when our bird count has lots of helpers.

Donations are made directly using the Donate button below or through pledges made on a per species basis. With checks mailed in based on how well we did in counting and documenting the bird species during the bird count.

For further information watch for a Birdathon announcement in next year’s May/June issue of our newsletter Hummin’.

2022 Special Announcement

May Day 2022 was a big day for our Audubon chapter, yielding a fabulously successful Birdathon fundraiser in support of chapter activities and programs which brought in more than $25,000. Many thanks to Jonathan Nakai for organizing it. The principal uses of the money raised will be to support Jazmin Rios’s work with young people and several habitat enhancement projects around the peninsula she is developing.
