The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response (CDFW-OSPR) is the state’s lead agency for responding to oil spills that impact California’s waterways and wildlife. We work to provide the best achievable protection of California’s natural resources by preventing, preparing for, and responding to spills of oil, and restoring affected resources. During a spill, CDFW-OSPR coordinates with the US Coast Guard, US Environmental Protection Agency, industry partners, and other agencies to ensure the safety of responders and the public, clean up spilled material, ensure protection of California’s sensitive wildlife and habitats, and keep interested parties, Tribal Nations, and the public informed of response efforts.

California is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world but unfortunately, oil spills threaten our unique species and habitats. In partnership with the Oiled Wildlife Care Network, CDFW-OSPR works to capture, care for, and rehabilitate wildlife impacted by spills. Opportunities are available to members of the public to become pre-trained and affiliated volunteers who can help with oil spill responses in your community. More information about CDFW-OSPR, specific incidents, and oil spill response, in general, is available on our social media accounts (@calspillwatch), wildlife.ca.gov/ospr, and calspillwatch.wildlife.ca.gov.
