Up in Smoke: Impacts of Wildfire Smoke and Urban Air Pollution on Birds
Dr. Olivia Sanderfoot
UCLA La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science
Dr. Sanderfoot is an ecologist with a passion for conservation, teaching, and science communication and policy. She studies the impacts of wildfire smoke and urban air pollution on birds and other wildlife.
Olivia currently works as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Morgan Tingley‘s lab in the UCLA Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Her research is focused on the effects of wildfire smoke on the health and behavior of birds; she is especially interested in discovering how smoke shapes species distributions and characterizing smoke refugia for birds. She is fully funded by the La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science Postdoctoral Fellowship.
In this timely presentation following the wildfires of January 2025, Dr. Sanderfoot will present on the short-term and long-term impacts of air pollution and wildfire smoke on birds from fires. Additionally, she will talk about Project Phoenix – a community science program engaging birders all along the West Coast in monitoring birds during the fire season to learn about avian responses to wildfire smoke disturbance.
